General Questions

What types of pearls do you sell?

At Girls Love Pearls, we specialise in a range of high-quality pearls including South Sea pearls (Australian, Tahitian, Phillipines and Indonesian), Japanese Akoya pearls and Freshwater pearls, and other carefully sourced varieties. Each pearl is selected for its lustre, shape, and overall quality.

Are your pearls real?

Yes, all pearls sold by Girls Love Pearls are genuine cultured pearls. We do not sell imitation or synthetic pearls.

What is the difference between freshwater and South Sea pearls?

Oyster grown pearls (grown in saltwater oysters) are rarer larger and known for their satin-like glow (aka orient of pearl). Freshwater pearls (grown in freshwater mussels) are typically more affordable and come in a range of sizes. Saltwater pearls (South Sea and Japanese Akoya) are often considered amongst the most valuable pearls available.

How do I choose the right pearl jewellery?

Choosing pearl jewellery depends on personal style, occasion, and budget. Factors to consider include pearl size, colour, shape, and lustre. We’re always happy to guide you in selecting a piece that suits your needs.

How do you assess a pearl?

Pearls are graded based on five key factors: size, lustre, surface, shape, and colour. Sizes vary by type (e.g. smaller Japanese pearls vs larger South Sea pearls). Lustre refers to how well a pearl reflects light—ranging from high, mirror-like shine to dull or chalky. Surface quality looks at blemishes, from clean to heavily marked. Shape can range from rare round pearls to more common baroque forms. Finally, colour includes both the main body colour and subtle overtones, such as white, pink, cream, or yellow.

Care & Maintenance Questions

How should I care for my pearl jewellery?

Pearls are delicate and should be treated with care. We recommend:

  • Storing pearls separately from other jewellery
  • Avoiding contact with perfumes, hairspray, and chemicals
  • Wiping pearls with a soft cloth after wearing

How should I store my pearls?

Pearls should be stored in a soft cloth or pouch, away from harder jewellery that could scratch their surface. Avoid airtight containers, as pearls benefit from a small amount of natural moisture.

How often should pearls be restrung?

Pearl necklaces and bracelets should typically be restrung every 3 to 4 years if worn regularly, or when the thread shows signs of wear.
